AWN seeks end to conspiracies against women leaders

AWN seeks end to conspiracies against women leaders

Jul 27, 2017 - 11:40

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): A womeninfo-icon’s advocacy group on Thursday called on TV channels to respect media ethics and women’s sensitivities while reporting on their overall situation.

“We once again urge all channels to respect the personal integrity of women leaders and conduct full investigations before airing special reports (about them),” the Afghan Women Network (AWN) said.

It upbraided the channels for under-reporting on domestic violence in the Afghan foreign services community abroad, sexual harassment and other corrupt practices.

AWN appreciated the government for trusting women with higher positions in the cabinet and appointing them as ambassadors, diplomats and councilors. It also sought support for the women seeking reforms in their offices for transparency.

The women needed a friendly work environmentinfo-icon based on professionalism and respect for their leadership positions rather than personal grudges or ethno-political biases against them, a statement from the network said.

“We reject as baseless Televisions reports justifying the sacking of seasoned politician and women’s rights activist Shinkai Karokhail, who has won the trust of her constituents during her two terms as an Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon member,” the statement added.

It denounced the reports, not depicting media impartiality and respect for the ethics of balanced and independent reporting, as a personal attack on women leaders. Women’s bold initiatives such as shelter homes were often misrepresented through biased and ill-informed reports, it alleged.

AWN asked the government to support women with enabling environment for women in civil services. Women’s suppression should be discouraged and conspiracies against them in the decision making process foiled.
