India sees IS as a threat to assets in Afghanistan

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): India views the Islamic State militant group -- also known as Daesh -- as a threat to its interests in Afghanistaninfo-icon, a newspaper reported on Sunday.

India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval shared the concern with Obama administration officials during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to America.

A report in the Asian Age quoted unnamed sources as saying that the advisor also hinted at the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISIinfo-icon) aiding the insurgent outfit.

Indian consulates in Jalalabad and Mazar-i-Sharif and its embassy in Kabul have come under attack from militant groups. Indian security agencies are worried over the ISIS gaining ground in Nangarhar.

“ISI may back such groups to target Indian assets as Pakistaninfo-icon is extremely sceptical of India’s growing influence in Afghanistan,” the report said

Washington wants New Delhi to play a key strategic role in Afghanistan, especially after the American forces start pulling out in a phased manner by the end of this year.

US security agencies are said to have promised complete co-operation in ensuring that Indian assets are not targeted by terror groups.
