Oct 30, 2016 - 18:02

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): The governor of southern Helmand province said on Sunday they were currently busy strengthening security in the provincial capital Lashkargah and would implement effective plans in winter against militants.

Hayatullah Hayat told a press conference here that 1500 more security personnel had arrived in the city for better security situation.

“We are trying to control the capital’s security situation but new plans would help us provide more better security in winter”, the governor said, adding the enemy had been weakened and retreated into defensive mode from offensive.

He added at least 24 militants were killed and their weapons and ammunition destroyed   in clashes during the past 24 hours in different parts of Lashkargah. The clashes between security forces and militants were still ongoing.

Hayat said foreign forces were carrying out airstrikes in support of the Afghan forces.

Helmand is the most insecure province of Afghanistaninfo-icon where six districts are under Talibaninfo-icon control and the government’s writ in a number of districts is confined to the district centers alone.
