90 tons of drugs seized in 45 days, says official

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Afghan police have seized averagely two tons of drugs everyday during the past one and a half months, arresting 284 people in connection with drug smuggling across the country, an official said on Tuesday

Police seized 61 tons of raw hashish in Khak-i-Jabbar district of central Kabul province on December 3, said deputy counternarcotics head at the Ministry of Interior.

Brig. Gen. Baz Mohammad Ahmadi told reporters in Kabul the hashish were seized in Gardi Maidan area of Khak-i-Jabbar district.

He said no one had been detained in connection with the drugs, but efforts were underway to find and arrest them.

In overall, Afghan police had seized more than 90 tons of narcotics including heroin, opium, alcoholic beverages and others across the country during the past one and a half months, he said.

Ahmadi said the drugs were seized during 104 operations in which 284 people including seven policemen and 10 womeninfo-icon had been detained.

Police also destroyed seven heroin and six hashish processing factories during the operations, he said.

He said 66 vehicles, 16 heavy and small weapons and 52 walkie-talkies and telephone sets of drug smugglers were also seized by police forces.

Without giving more details, Ahmadi said police launched 1,425 anti-drug operations and seized 328 tonns of narcotics and arrested 1,692 people in connection with the drugs across the country this solar yearinfo-icon.

Reports say Afghanistaninfo-icon produces 90 percent of the worldinfo-icon’s narcotics and currently 3.6 million people or 12 percent of Afghanistan all population are addicted to drugs.
