Kunar governor survives Taliban ambush

ASADABAD (Pajhwok): The governor of eastern Kunar province was among several senior provincial officials who escaped unhurt in a Talibaninfo-icon ambush on Sunday.

Governor Wahidullah Kalimzai, Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon member Saleh Mohammad, police chief Maj. Col. Juma Gul Himmat, second army brigade commander Brig. Gen. Mirwais Safi, the provincial council head and members had gone to Watapur district to inaugurate some projects.

Their convoy came under attack from Taliban militants on the way back from the district, about 14km north of Asadabad, the provincial capital.

Security forces escorting the convoy engaged the attackers and pushed them back, said Abdul Ghani Musamim, the governor’s spokesman.

He said the attack took place in Peroni locality of the district. He said there were no casualties as a result of the ambush.

The Taliban have not yet commented about the incident .
