Balkh governor hints at standing down in near future

Mar 21, 2017 - 16:24

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Atta Mohammad Noor, the powerful governor of northern Balkh province, on Tuesday hinted at standing down in the near future to keep his political struggle alive.

Addressing the traditional flag-hoisting ceremony in Mazar-i-Sharif, Noor recalled there was widespread anarchy in the province 12 years ago when he was appointed as Balkh governor.

At the time of his takeover, he said, the provincial capital had been ruined as a result of war and there were irresponsible gunmen all around. Provincial revenue was not transferred to the central government, he added.

But today, the governor claimed, Balkh was known for reconstructioninfo-icon, good governance and security. He also referred to efforts for promoting educationinfo-icon, agricultureinfo-icon, healthinfo-icon and trade in the province.

While thanking the president for re-appointing him as governor, Noor announced his plan to quit soon. He will contest the upcoming election and keep the promises held out to the masses.

Noor said he was awaiting the outcome of talks with President Ghani’s aides. He also hoped for the implementation of the decisions taken jointly by the Palace and Jamiat-i-Islamiinfo-icon party.
