Work on irrigation canal kicks off in Nuristan

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The construction of a 650 meters irrigation canal has been launched in Paron, the capital of eastern Nuristan province, an official said on Wednesday.

Governor Hafiz Abdul Qayyum told Pajhwok Afghan News the canal would be built at a cost of 6.8 million afghanis from the budget of the Agricultural and Livestock Department.

He said the project would help irrigate around 100 acres of land in Manda village of Paron. The project would completed in six months.

Agricultureinfo-icon and Irrigation Director Eng. Sayed Al-Ghayas said the canal would help boost agriculture in Nuristan, particularly Paron.

“We have devised more plans for the development of the agriculture sector in Nuristan after this project is implemented,” he added.

Maulviinfo-icon Inayatullah, a local tribal elder, was happy about the project and asked the government to closely observe its implementation.

He asked the central government to offer more reconstructioninfo-icon projects for Nuristan, a remote backwarf province bordering Pakistaninfo-icon.
