8,000 in the run as Pakistan scholarship exams begin

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The process of examinations for scholarships has kicked off at the Pakistaninfo-icon Embassy in Kabul, an official said on Saturday.

Akhtar Munir, press attaché, told Pajhwok Afghan News the examinations for scholarships started on Friday and would continue for four days.

He said the test was conducted in diplomatic missions in Kabul, Jalalabad, Kandahar, Herat and Mazar-i-Sharif. Munir said 8,000 Afghans had applied online for the scholarship exams and all of them had been called for the test.

He added an independent delegation from the Higher Educationinfo-icon Commission of Pakistan had arrived in Kabul to oversee the examinations.

Mohammad Abid, a student who appeared in the test, thanked Pakistani government for providing higher education opportunities for Afghan student. He said the test was conducted in transparent manner but complained the paper was difficult.

Wasim S. Hashmi, Advisor HRD Human Resource Development at HEC, said Pakistan had approved master’s and doctorate scholarships for Afghan students for the first time, in addition to bachelor scholarships.

He said medicine, engineering, law, economics, pharmacy, computer science and other disciplines were included in the scholarships.

The scholarship includes tuition fee, healthinfo-icon expenditures, hostel fee and food charges. In addition, the successful candidates will also receive monthly pocket money.

He said in past most of Afghan students were unable to complete studies. But now they will be taught a six-month language course ahead of their main course studies.
