Assault on Iraqi embassy in Kabul widely condemned

Assault on Iraqi embassy in Kabul widely condemned

Aug 01, 2017 - 09:36

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistaninfo-icon (UNAMA), NATOinfo-icon and Pakistaninfo-icon  condemned the Islamic State-claimed suicide attack against the embassy of Iraq in Kabul.

The attack in a residential area, lasting around five hours, involved several armed men who killed two Afghan civilian employees inside the embassy and injured a police officer.

“This is yet another attack that appears to have targeted the international community but in which Afghan civilians bore the brunt of the violence,” a statement from UNAMA said.

“This attack shows complete contempt for human life, as well as the international law designed to protect diplomats,” said Tadamichi Yamamoto, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan. “I commend the Afghan security forces for their swift action.”

According to the statement, diplomatic missions are civilian objects protected under international humanitarian law, and attacks directed at them are serious violations that may amount to war crimes.

UNAMA expressed its condolences to the loved ones of the Afghans killed in the attack and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.

Meanwhile, NATO Senior Civilian Representative Ambassador Cornelius Zimmermann also denounced the attack as a brazen violation of the principles of international law. “ISIS has once again demonstrated their utter disrespect for civilian lives.”

In a separate statement, he said: “I offer my heartfelt sympathies to all those affected and my solidarity to the entire team of the Iraqi Embassy in these difficult moments, and I commend the Afghan security forces for their swift and decisive action in repelling this attack.”

He added: “NATO stands firm in its commitment to continue supporting the Afghan security forces and institutions, as they tackle the threats posed by ISIS and other terrorist groups.”

In a separate statement, the Government of Pakistan strongly condemned the terrorist attack at the Embassy of Iraq in Kabul.

“We stand in solidarity with our Iraqi and Afghan brothers who underwent this ordeal and suffered the terrible attack. We extend our heartfelt sympathies and sincere condolence to the bereaved families and pray for the early recovery of those who have suffered injuries in the incident.

Pakistan condemned terrorism in its all forms and manifestations. It is a global phenomenon and all countries must cooperate to fight this menace,” the statement said.
