Education Ministry receives $7m in assistance

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Several international and national organizations on Tuesday provided $7 million in aid to the Ministry of Educationinfo-icon for development of educational system in nine provinces of the country.

A statement from the MoE said the Norwegian Committee donated $4.7 million, Save the Children $550,000, Humanitarian Assistance for the Womeninfo-icon and Children of Afghanistaninfo-icon (HAWCA) $269,000, ZOWA $265,000 and National Federation of UNESCO Associations in JAPAN $236,000 to the ministry.

Asayesh Jahani donated $167,000, Sitara-i-Erfan 1.4 million afghanis, Islamic Relief, a Canadian based organization, 1.2 million afghanis and another international organization $723,000 to the MoE, the statement said.

Agreements of the aid and on relevant projects implementation were signed today between Education Minister Dr. Asadullah Hanif Balkhi and representatives of the organizations.

Balkhi said the aid would be spent to provide education opportunities to 42,000 students who had returned to Kandahar, Kunar and Laghman provinces.

Education courses for women would be arranged in Balhk and Bamyan provinces as part of the aid program, he said.

The aid would be also used for construction of 15 classrooms and 10 bathrooms in five schools in Nangarhar province and 96 classrooms in Kabul and Kandahar provinces.

Balkhi said four schools would be reconstructed in Logar province and 1,000 people would be provided education facilities in Kabul and Bamyan province by using the aid.

“The aid is allocated to these provinces because they are affected by war and their people are deprived of education facilities”, he added.
