PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistaninfo-icon and China have held fresh talks on regional and international efforts for lasting peace and stability in Afghanistaninfo-icon, days after the US president unveiled his much-anticipated policy for South Asia.

"Ambassador Deng Xijun reaffirmed China’s continuing and firm support for Pakistan’s commitment to peace and stability in Afghanistan," the Foreign Office said after Monday's meeting in Islamabad.

Emphasising that there was no military solution to the conflict, China's special envoy underlined the need for a politically-negotiated settlement as part of an Afghan-led Afghan-owned peace process.

According to a statement from the Foreign Office, the diplomat also reiterated China's position that Pakistan's efforts for eliminating terrorism should be recognised by the international community.

Janjua underlined the need for close cooperation and coordination between Pakistan and China to promote "the shared objective of peace and stability in the region" while recalling the "productive deliberations" between the two sides during her recent visit to Beijing.

They agreed to strengthen cooperation in "facilitating peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan as well as promoting meaningful engagement between the three neighbourly countries," the release said.

While announcing his long-awaited strategy for the conflict in Afghanistan last week, President Donald Trump warned Pakistan to stop providing shelter to the Afghan Talibaninfo-icon and other terrorists on its soil.
