Civilians among 29 killed in Herat airstrike

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Nearly 30 people, including civilians and Talibaninfo-icon militants, were killed and another 12 injured in a predawn airstrikes by NATOinfo-icon forces in western Herat province, an official said on Tuesday.

The governor’s spokesman, Jilani Farhad, said initial reports showed 13 civilians in nearby houses had also been killed and eight others injured in the airstrike in Bakhtabad area.

At least 16 Taliban, including two notorious commanders, were killed and four others injured in the bombardment, he added.

Jilani said a delegation from the governor’s office had been tasked to investigate the civilian casualties in the airstrike.

He added the airstrike allowed 19 people to flee from Taliban captivity.

Syed Azem Kibarzani, a member of the provincial council, said foreign troops carried out the airstrike at around 4:00am on Monday morning in Bakhtabad area.

He claimed 15 civilians were killed and several others injured  in the airstrike.

Mohammad Rafiq Sherzai, spokesman for the Herat Zonal Hospital, said the body of a boy and three injured people had been delivered at the hospital from Bakhtabad locality.

He said two girls and a 26-year-old woman were among the injured.
