Ready to back US bid for Afghan stability: Bajwa

Ready to back US bid for Afghan stability: Bajwa

Sep 07, 2017 - 18:59

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The Pakistaninfo-icon army chief has signalled his country's willingness to support US efforts for peace in Afghanistaninfo-icon.

But in the same breath, Gen. Qamar Bajwa urged the global fraternity to address Pakistan’s security concerns and acknowledge its sacrifices in the war on terror.

Speaking at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi on Wednesday, he reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to peace and stability in Afghanistan.

Pakistan would sincerely support any action by US and NATOinfo-icon forces to bring stability to Afghanistan, he promised, saying Afghanistan's war could not be fought on Pakistan's soil.

"We have tried to help Afghanistan beyond our capabilities, made sincere efforts to bring peace to Afghanistan," the army chief observed.

Afghanistan being a sovereign country was free to make its own decisions, he said, adding Pakistan would not be a part of war among different Afghan factions.

If worldinfo-icon powers could not help it combat terrorism, Pakistan should not be held responsible for their failure to bring peace to the region, he continued.

“We cannot fight Afghanistan’s war in Pakistan,” he said in an apparent response to US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s statement that Pakistan was expected to take decisive action against militant groups on its soil.

For complete impartiality in the Afghan conflict, Pakistan desired early repatriation of Afghan refugees from and securing the 2,600km porous Durand Lineinfo-icon, Gen. Bajwa said.

The war against extremism and terrorism had to be won for the prosperity of Pakistan's future generations, the army chief stressed, saying the whole region would be destabilised if Pakistan faltered in this campaign.
