12 security personnel dead in Kandahar bombing

Sep 28, 2017 - 11:06

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Twelve security personnel have been killed and four others wounded in a car bombing in the Maroof district of southern Kandahar province, an official said on Thursday.

Provincial police spokesman Zia Durrani told Pajhwok Afghan News that the suicide assault took place at the district police headquarters on Wednesday night.

He said the militants used a Humavee vehicle in the attack, killing a dozen personnel of national police, border police and National Directorate of Security (NDSinfo-icon). Four others were wounded.

As usual, the Talibaninfo-icon claimed responsibility for the attack. Qari Yousaf Ahmadi, the group's spokesman, said the fighters attacked the police headquarters and overran the district.

He, however, did not give any information about casualties. But another Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said dozens of security forces had suffered casualties.

A security source, who did not want to be named, acknowledged the district was under Taliban control for a few hours, but was recaptured after the arrival of reinforcements.

However, Durrani denied the district's fall to the Taliban.
