Policemen among 67 killed in Kandahar checkpoints attack

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): At least 45 Talibaninfo-icon insurgents and 22 policemen have been killed as insurgents stormed security checkpoints in Maiwand district of southern Kandahar province, an official said on Tuesday.

Police spokesman Zia Durrani told Pajhwok Afghan News that hundreds of militants attacked security check-posts in the district on Monday night. 22 police personnel were killed and 15 others wounded.

Forty- five militants were also killed and 35 others injured in retaliatory gun fires of security forces, he said, adding the militants wanted to overrun the checkpoints and capture the district centre, but could not execute their plan.

On Monday, four US soldiers suffered injuries as the troops convoy was struck by a car-bombing in the Dand district of Kandahar province.
